About Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea, located in the South Pacific region, has a geographical size of roughly 461,074 square kilometers, nearly double the geographical size of the North and South Islands of New Zealand.  New Guinea itself is the second largest island in the world.  This ethnically diverse country has a population of around 6.7 million people.  The climate is tropical with two distinct monsoon seasons which in layman’s terms means that if it is not raining now, it will be soon.   More than 700 languages are spoken throughout the country by the indigenous population, due mostly to the isolation caused by the mountainous terrain and tribal culture.  The official languages are English, Pidgin and Motu.

Papua New Guinea is rich with many natural resources including gold, copper, oil, natural gas and lumber.  More than one tribal village has been told by early missionaries that they were “sitting on a gold mine.”  The first mining operations in Papua New Guinea began in 1878 but there was very little economic impact for the country until the early 1930’s.  With the discovery of the Ok Tedi mine in 1984 there came a gold rush that is still going to this day.  The New Ireland Province currently has the second largest gold deposit in the world.  The Panguna copper mine opened in Bougainville in 1969 and was the largest open pit copper mine in the world until it was closed in 1989.  When the US$10 billion liquefied natural gas project begins operation in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea in 2012 it is possible that the GDP of this small nation will double.

Tourism is a viable and growing industry in Papua New Guinea.  It is home to some great diving locations including WWII aircraft, tanks (yes tanks) and of course ship wrecks.  Papua New Guinea also lays claim to some of the best surf breaks and whitewater rafting in the world.  The Kokoda Trail is probably the most famous tourist hotspot in Papua New Guinea and is gaining more interest every year.  Over 5600 walked the trail in 2008, many of them Australian and Japanese veterans and family, walking to commemorate the battles fought in the Owen Stanley ranges during WWII.  The Kokoda Trail is also home to the Kokoda Challenge Race which has been won three years in a row by Brendan Buka, a 22-year-old Papua New Guinean trekking porter from Kokoda.  From fishing to bird watching, tramping to cultural festivals, there is something for everybody in Papua New Guinea.

Papua New Guinea is an exciting and vastly undiscovered country with a distinctive culture.  This small nation is quietly making itself known on the world commodity markets.  It is estimated that more than 5000 people will be required between now and 2011 for projects starting in late 2009.  Magellan Recruitment Ltd. is at the forefront of this new trend.  Opportunities for employment in all sectors from trades people to professionals abound.   Now is the time to pursue that exciting and good paying position in this unique country. Magellan Recruitment Ltd. Is the company to help you find this position.
